There were some people of African or Moorish descent in London at the time, including some high-ranking ambassadors to the Tudor court, but they were few, and considered foreign and exotic. Othello remained a popular play in the Shakespearean repertory throughout its first centuries of existence. The title role always dominated the play by comparison with more recent productions, which have given greater attention to Iago, Desdemona and Emilia. Othello was typically played with nobility and tragic dignity by the leading actor of the company. All recorded Othellos before the nineteenth century were white actors, though their makeup suggested a range of ethnic origins for Othello, from the Arab world to Sub-Saharan Africa. The greatest of these actors was probably Edmund Kean, the leading theatrical figure of the Romantic period in Britain. Lacking the neoclassical majesty of some of his predecessors, Kean changed the conception of the role, making Othello an explosive figure of passionate emotion. Though small of stature and weak of voice, Kean poured a frightening intensity of feeling into the role; he actually collapsed and died midway through a performance.

Iago proclaims his hatred of Othello for promoting the less experienced Cassio to the position of personal lieutenant. Othello suggests that Desdemona be summoned to account for her actions, and meanwhile tells the story of his wooing: how she fell in love with him as she listened to his tales of travel and adventure. Desdemona then announces her devotion to Othello, and Brabantio is forced to accept the match.
Desdemona requests, and is granted, permission to accompany her new husband to Cyprus. She will travel with Iago. Iago, alone, begins to hatch his plot to destroy Othello by convincing him that his wife is having an affair with the handsome young Cassio. Act 2, Scene 1: Cassio, Iago and Desdemona, and lastly Othello arrive in Cyprus, emerging unscathed from a storm, which has providentially destroyed the Turkish fleet. Iago involves Roderigo in a plan to displant Cassio. In his closing soliloquy Iago justifies his plot against Othello and Cassio.
Scene 3: Cassio, who is on duty, is lured into drinking too much by Iago; Roderigo then prompting a brawl, Othello, arriving on the scene, is informed by an apparently reluctant Iago that Cassio was at fault. Scene 2: Othello will meet Iago later in the day.

They are in love, but Othello can’t get past his self-doubt as to why such a lovely woman would love him. This leaves his mind susceptible to the tragic poisoning by the scheming Iago , even though Desdemona has done nothing wrong. Too often played as a weak character, Desdemona is strong and bold, especially when it comes to Othello. She describes her commitment to him:. This quote demonstrates Desdemona’s strength and bravery.
Her father appears to be a controlling man, and she stands up to him. She speaks for herself instead of letting her father speak for her, and she defends her relationship with Othello. Othello may be impressive on the battlefield, but his own personal insecurity leads to the tragic end of the story. Iago’s lies about Cassio feed into Othello’s self-doubt to the point that Othello doesn’t believe the truth when he hears it; he believes the “evidence” that fits with his skewed, incorrect perception that is borne from his own insecurity.
He cannot believe in reality, for it seems too good to be true. Desdemona may have the choice of many suitable matches, but she chooses Othello, even despite his racial difference.

Othello, a Stage History
Othello has often been considered the most painful of Shakespeare’s tragedies. The fall of a proud, dignified man, the murder of a graceful, loving woman, and the unreasoning hatred of a villain, have all evoked fear and pity in audiences throughout the centuries. If it lacks the cosmic grandeur of some of Shakespeare’s other well-respected dramas, Othello nevertheless possesses a power that is perhaps more immediate and more strongly felt than that of his other plays.
Othello is also unique among Shakespeare’s great tragedies in that it is set in a private world.

Clark assigns tentative dates for five of these actors: Trefusis c.
Only one of the actors named, John Freeman, may perhaps help to set certain probable limits for dating the Othello promptbook, at least in so far as his connection with the production is concerned. Clark’s dating for Freeman, as noted above, is “c. This would seem to leave three probable dates for the appearance of his name in the Othello prompt-book: 1 prior to , 2 the season, and 3 the season.
